What do we do..??

Urmi mainly deals with addressing the grave environmental issues by educating people in the most understanding way possible.

In order to educate we do……

Campaigning: in different pollution prone areas about the effects of the pollution and help them in following various measures to reduce the pollution and create awareness among them.

Rain water harvesting: Realizing that in a few years drinking water would be a rare commodity we have taken the challenge to harness the rain water and put it into proper use.

Plantations: Trees are very important to maintain the co2 levels in the atmosphere therefore we have taken an oath to make people plant a million trees.

Waste Management: One of the major problems of today is improper disposal of wastage leading to various kinds of pollution. Therefore we have taken a step in educating people of different sectors about the proper disposal of wastage and about Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Technical Solutions To Environmental Problems: In today’s world there are many unsolved problems which are hitting a deathblow to the environment slowly but surely. What we need is an engineer’s mind to design the solution and we here at Urmi are doing our part. We began working on two projects E-Waste and biological purification of exhaust gases. And we aim at providing 5 technical solutions to environmental problems.

Initiate the change: Urmi is all about change we have already ignited the fire and are endeavoring to burn continuously and consistently.

Why did we have to come up with URMI..!?

They say.. necessity is the mother of all inventions but ironically in our case it is more the frustration resulting out of the irresponsible society digging the ground for their own burial that too knowingly..! In spite of knowing the problems resulting out of improper waste disposal, usage of plastic, and other ways that we contribute to increase the pollution in the environment we dont bother to make an effort from our side to make up for the damage we are causing to the planet..! Its not the lack of knowingness but the lack of enthusiasm that stunts development in this country..! Being the youth of this country there are a few responsibilities that lie on our shoulders and working for a better tomorrow is the most important one..! So realising that we must at least do our part for the society and because doing it alone was next to impossible.. we came up with a group of like minded people working for a cause and formed a non-profit non-government organisation which works for the betterment of the society.. URMI..! Which by the way in Sanskrit means.. A wave..!!

The First Activity..!!

All-endearing cleanliness,
Virtue next to godliness,
Easiest, cheapest, needfull’st duty,
To the body health and beauty;
Who that’s human would refuse it,
When a little water does it?

This area is in Indira Nagar located in between two schools- one of the two schools has been abandoned due to the excessive trash that was being dumped there. The dumping of the waste in that area has become a menace to the people living in that area and also to the students who have to wade through the piles of wastage in order to go their school daily.

Urmi noticed this and decided to help the people of that place by helping them in cleaning the waste and educate them about the proper disposal of wastes.

Our team initiated the change by picking up the wastes and cleaning the place.

In this process we have educated and enlightened the localities and even the children joined us in our endeavor.

We spoke to the localities and listened to their problems and also helped in solving their issues about the menance caused by the improper disposal of the garbage.

We have also campaigned the whole area and educated the localites about proper disposal techniques and till date we have been monitoring this area with the help of the area’s municipality and the people.

 THE RESULT OF OUR ENDEAVOUR

                                         Before                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              After

The people of this area have now understood the importance of the waste management and are properly accumulating the plastics for recycling.

Activity 2: Planting Trees..!!!

Planting a tree has long been a suggestion to better the earth, possibly even preceding the outcry and warning of global warming, water crisis, etc.  It was always one of those quaint ideas opted for to mark a special occasion, or to simply make one’s landscape a little prettier.  Now days, with the new focus clearly pointing to the desperate need for action against the ongoing destruction of our natural resources, it is more common to hear the simple comment that part of what you can actually do to help is to plant a tree.  It seems like such a simple and menial task.  But the truth is; every tree makes a difference.

Today’s major burning problem is GLOBAL WARMING mainly caused to the increase in the levels of the green house gases of which the main gas is carbon dioxide. To maintain the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere plants and trees play an important role. In order to make people realize the importance of tree plantation Urmi has taken a step to plant trees in different areas we have successfully started the plantations are aiming towards planting a million trees by educating people.

Rain Water Harvesting..!!!!

Water, the Hub of Life.

Water is its mater and matrix, mother and medium.

Water is the most extraordinary substance!

Practically all its properties are anomalous, which enabled life to use it as building material for its machinery.

Life is water dancing to the tune of solids.

Rainwater is an economical, safe and sustainable source of quality water when it is captured and stored in a correct manner. The most valuable natural resource is water and most people are aware of the limited supply and importance of water especially in dry continents. Rainwater harvesting is a three step process involving the collection of rainwater from surfaces such as roofs; the storage of rainwater and the distribution of rainwater for indoor or outdoor use. By using rainwater, a number of significant economic, social and environmental benefits can be accomplished. By using rainwater harvesting systems to capture rainwater, the reliance on water storage dams and systems can be significantly reduced. This also places less pressure on water storage systems and can possibly lessen the need to increase the water storage infrastructure. Collecting and using harvested rainwater can also considerably decrease the size of your water bills.

Realizing this with help of our principal Col.Dr.T.S.Surendra and the immense encouragement given by our college management in B.V.R.I.T. we have taken up rain water harvesting program and are implementing it in our college.
